Golf loses a truly great friend – by Brent Belton (2002)
GOLF HAS LOST a true friend. Bob Steadman, a long-time pro at Bay Pointe Country Club, and prior to that a PGA professional on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, passed away Wednesday November 27, 2002 in his childhood hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. “Steady” the name most of us called him by, was a unique talent. An excellent ball stricker, and an even better putter. He could hit the ball through the eye of needle, and well, if you needed a putt made, you could bet that Steady would ease up to the ball with that slow sideways motion of his, waggle once or twice and send it DEAD HART, every time.
But the uniqueness of the man was really in the rapport he had with the people. Now Steady enjoyed wagering a buck or two and he had a knack for always striking up a game. It seemed wherever he was, people would travel from miles just to come play in Steady’s game. Some came just to have a game to play in, but most came just to be around Steady.
There was not a more pleasant man to play golf with than Bob Steadman. He had a way of making you enjoy your round even if things weren’t going so well. Maybe it was his talent, maybe it was his sayings like, “Three in row makes a rooster crow!” as he putted his third consecutive birdie in the hole. Maybe it was his demeanor; maybe it was his golf etiquette, or maybe it was just Steady being Steady! Whatever it was, those of us that played golf with him will miss it.
BOB LOVED SPORTS and loved to have a good time. Now there were days where he couldn’t remember where he left his drink, or where his glasses were, but you could bet he would have two glasses on when he sat down to watch Alabama play football. And boy those fireworks. He’d shoot ‘em to run off the geese on the course, he’d shoot ‘em to celebrate the 4th of July, he’d shoot ‘em just to see someone jump on the first tee or in the parking lot, and sometimes he’d just shoot ‘em for a prank but it was always fun, just Bob doing what Bob did best, having a good time! Now if you look up in the sky this New Year’s Eve and see what looks like the tail of a comet, that will be no comet, that’s Steady firing one off from Heaven. Now, as I sit in Bob’s favorite chair – the one in front the television in Bay Pointe’s restaurant, I cant’ help but think what a great ambassador of golf Steady was. He was always helping people with their game. He believed everyone should play and encouraged them to do so.
Steady would say, “Now you’re gripping the club like you are choking a mule!” And then promptly place their hands correctly on the club. He’d walk out to the chipping green and say, “Stop chopping wood!” He’d demonstrate and soon have their chipping touch restored. What a great friend to golf and its players he was! I DO NOT KNOW how you’d judge a man nor would I do so, but if you do so by the honesty of a man then Bob Steadmanshould be at the top of the list. None of us will ever know a more honest man than Steady.
